How long your TYPO3 website is supported – and what to do when support ends

A TYPO3 website has no best-before date printed on the packaging, but it does have one. Each version receives security fixes only for a certain time. After that the website keeps working, but nobody fixes the holes found in it any more. See how long your version is supported, how to find out which version you have and what your options are.

Which version gets fixes until when

TYPO3 is released in versions with long-term support (LTS). Each one receives free security fixes for about three years, and the dates are known in advance.

If your website runs on version 12 or older, it no longer receives free security fixes.

A current example of why the version matters: the critical php2shell flaw in PHP from 21 October 2026. Officially fixed PHP versions were released only for PHP 8.2 and newer, and TYPO3 10 and older do not run on them.

How to find out which version your website runs on

  1. Quick check on t3web.awis-group.com. Enter your domain and within a few seconds you see the system, an estimate of the TYPO3 version, HTTPS, server response time and other basics (the PHP version, if the server reveals it). No registration. We can determine the exact version from the public part of a website only for old versions (up to 6.2) – for newer ones we show a range, for example “11 or newer”, and confirm the exact version in the audit.
  2. In the TYPO3 backend. If you have administrator access, you will find the TYPO3 and PHP versions in the system information panel in the top bar or in the “About” module.
  3. Ask your provider. And while you are at it, ask who installed security updates last and when.

What end of support means in practice

  • A hacked website. Flaws in old versions are publicly known and bots try them automatically. A hacked website can redirect visitors to fraudulent pages, and Google may start warning people about it.
  • Enquiries that never arrive. Forms on an old system can stop working after a server change or when e-mail providers tighten their rules. This is often discovered late.
  • Old PHP. Old TYPO3 versions run only on old PHP, which no longer receives fixes either (PHP 7.4, for example, since November 2022). When the hosting provider updates PHP, an old website can stop working overnight.
  • Liability for data. As the operator of the website, you are responsible for appropriate security of personal data from your forms (Art. 32 GDPR). A system without security fixes is hard to defend.

Extended support (ELTS) is sold by TYPO3 GmbH. It makes sense as a bridge when you cannot complete the upgrade in time – it keeps your website secure, but the website stays on the old version and you pay for support every year.

Why not upgrade a very old website “version by version”

For version 4 or 6, a step-by-step upgrade would mean going through as many as ten versions and rewriting extensions that nobody has maintained for years at every step. A different route pays off: move the content – texts, images and structure – to new elements on the current version and replace old extensions with current ones. We redirect the old URLs (301) so the website keeps its Google rankings.

Which version to move to now: 13 or 14?

Today we build on TYPO3 13 LTS because it is supported by all the extensions we use, such as the forms extension. We will move to version 14 LTS as soon as these extensions support it. Websites in the CARE subscription will be moved to 14 LTS at no extra cost, well before support for version 13 ends (31 December 2027).

What it costs with T3WEB

  • Upgrade S – €2,900 (up to 30 pages, 1 language), M – €4,900 (up to 150 pages, up to 3 languages), L – from €7,900. A fixed price after the free audit.
  • CARE – €39, €69 or €129 a month: hosting in the EU, updates, backups, monitoring and the move to the next LTS version included (next up TYPO3 14). No commitment.
  • A small website with up to 10 pages is sometimes worth rebuilding – a new website costs from €1,900. The audit shows which option is better value.

All prices exclude VAT.
